Celebrate Australia Day with your KidsAustralia Day Celebrations in Sydney - Celebrate with your Kids!

The Australia Day celebrations in Sydney are befitting of Australia's oldest and biggest city with events and activities spread far and wide, on the beaches, in the backyards, in the sky and in parks, it's a day to celebrate in true Aussie style. 
 
What a great opportunity to take the kids out to one of the many activities being held in and around Sydney so that they can share in the excitement of the celebrations.
 
It is also a great opportunity to visit your local parks, beaches and waterways to become swept up in the fun and celebration that will be going on.

Below are some of the top things to do this Australia Day.

Awesome Forces - Search & Rescue Display
See the Royal Australian Navy’s Dive Team in a Sea King Helicopter perform a series of search and rescue displays at Farm Cove.

The Sea King is a large and very versatile helicopter with the ability to pick up loads heavier than a Land Rover.

Tall Ships Race

Watch the Sea King flies over Sydney Harbour and leads the race carrying a giant Australian flag.

Cheer the majestic Tall Ships - Svanen, Bark Endeavour and James Craig - as they race from Bradley’s Head, finishing for line honours under the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

173rd Australia Day Regatta

The 173rd Australia Day Regatta, the world's oldest continuously conducted Regatta, will take place on Sydney Harbour, east of Clark Island, featuring hundreds of yachts and small sailing craft, throughout the afternoon.

A large fleet of ocean racing yachts will also race to Botany Bay and return for the Sesquicentenary Trophy.

Ferrython

Where else do four little old ladies get dressed up to the nines and enter a race watched by 100s of 1000s of people? There is simply no other event to compare to the legendary annual ferry race. 

In 2009, the Ferrython will once again let loose those four sassy and spirited old gals, the much-cherished little green and yellow catamarans, to race up and down Sydney Harbour.  And as always, they’ll be racing at full throttle in a battle for line honours and the coveted Lord Mayor’s Trophy.

Getting Around & Maps

Starts from Fort Denison, around Shark Island and finishes at the Harbour Bridge. A children's charity sponsors a ferry and they auction their tickets. For more information about these tickets please call 02 9819 1004. For any other information call 02 8248 6500 

There is a 50m exclusion zone around each ferry.

Sydney Ports Jazz on the Water Concert

Audiences both on and off shore will be able to chill out to the sublime sounds of the Sydney Ports Jazz on the Water concert .

Pyrmont Point Park will be the scene of a terrific line up of top jazz performers. Boaties can drop anchor in Johnsons Bay from 3pm.
Refreshments and licensed bar open from 3pm.

Darling Harbour Australia Day Party
As the epicentre of Sydney's Australia Day celebrations, on Monday 26 January Darling Harbour will once again be the city's most popular destination to celebrate what Australia is all about!
 
From 11.30 am there'll be free, live performances by some of Australia's most popular kids entertainment artists, an international food fair, harbour vessels parade and the Australia Day Spectacular - a stunning multimedia symphony of pyrotechnics, light, and music, culminating in a massive fireworks and audio visual display over Cockle Bay.

Picnic in Tumbalong Park
Roll out your picnic blanket and sit back and enjoy a fantastic day of family entertainment at Tumbalong Park this Australia Day. 
There'll be children's activities, roving entertainers, ABC for Kids shows, popular Australian children's bands plus an international food fair!

Australia Day in the Park and Great Australian BBQ The Great Australian BBQ offers an array of great Aussie taste sensations! There's a huge variety of food, ranging from traditional snags to Asian and European flavours, all set in the tranquillity of Hyde Park North. Hyde Park North 10:00 am - 9:00 pm
Hyde Park Main Stage Start the day by treating the kids to the ABC for Kids show that will launch the main stage program into the day. The little ones might even get the chance to meet some of their favourite characters face to face. Early afternoon, help welcome the newest citizens to our country at the Lord Mayor's Citizenship Ceremony.
But the fun doesn't end there. In the late afternoon, you and the family can sit back and relax on the grass and listen to an afternoon of music, performed by some of Sydney's most talented musicians.

ABC in the Park

The exhibition trailer offers fantastic fun for all the family for FREE! There’s the chance for budding radio broadcasters and TV stars to perform in a mini ABC TV and ABC Radio studio. Kids - and adults too - can present the news just like the professionals, or have a go at showing an invention on New Inventors, or interviewing your favourite ABC personality.

Or you can sing along with your favourite ABC Kids characters and take home your free recording on CD and plenty of ABC giveaways.

Citizenship Ceremony

Citizenship is more than just a ceremony and forms an important part of Australia Day celebrations. Welcome new citizens to our country at the Lord Mayor's Citizenship Ceremony presented by the City of Sydney and hear their life journeys.

The BIG Telly
A giant digital screen will feature past TV shows such as Skippy. You'll also be able try out your skills as part of the Great Aussie Guitar Hero Tournament powered by Xbox between 11.00am and 4.00pm and win great prizes.

The Wine Garden
Located next to the Great Aussie BBQ, the Wine Garden will host a ABC Classic FM Live Broadcast and the Wyndham Mobile Cellar Door.

Yabun 2009 
Yabun 2009 is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultures. The festival is a free event and features song dance, art and craft, performance, a kids zone, a circus ring, a corroboree, food, arts and crafts stalls and lots more.

Come and join the First Australians for a cultural feast.
 Victoria Park, Broadway 10:00 am - 6:00 pm
NRMA Motorfest This should get your engines revving! Don't miss this rare display of over 1,000 vintage, veteran and classic vehicles.

On show this year will be a replica race track of the famous Bathurst Mount Panorama racing circuit. Take the controls of this scaled down replica and test your driving skills on the day.

Rocksong at The Rocks 

10 hours, 9 stages, 70 big voices 

This Australia Day experience a free live music festival, Rocksong, in The Rocks unlike anything you’ve ever heard before. Rocksong brings together singers and songwriters from all corners of Australia and all genres of music.

With something for all ages there’ll be Indigenous voices and heart-roaring songs on the water, harmonies in laneways and parks, soloists on balconies, sing-a-longs in squares and an intimate outdoor live lounge.

Don’t miss The Herd, Dan Sultan, Christine Anu, Holly Throsby, Watussi, Kid Confucius, Tina Harrod, The Song Company and much more.

Vintage Bus Service
Stops at specially marked bus stops along George, Bridge, Alfred, Pitt, Elizabeth, Bathurst, Harbour and Hay Streets
Take a ride through the city as you could have 40 years ago from the top deck of a double-decker bus. As part of the Australia Day celebrations, a fleet of vintage buses from the Sydney Bus Museum will operate a circular route through the City. 

This service is a unique and fun opportunity to experience the timeless charm of the old-world transport.

The Arrive Live Oz Day 10k Run
The Arrive Alive Oz Day 10K wheelchair road race kicks off at 9.00am on Alfred Street, Circular Quay and is one of the first official Australia Day events on the Sydney calendar of celebrations.

The Arrive alive Oz Day 10K has attracted entries from the world's best athletes and former Paralympic medallists including home grown hero and Marathon gold medallist from the Athens Paralympic Games, Kurt Fearnley. He is keen to make 2009 his 5th consecutive title.

2009 will also see the return of 10 ten winner, Louise Sauvage.  

The 10K course starts and finishes on Alfred Street, Circular Quay and winds through the historic Rocks district, testing competitors all the way. The athleticism is truly amazing as they reach speeds of up to 50km/hr. Pretty fast!

Sydney Olympic Park

With kids’ rides, live music, a cultural bazaar and loads of free entertainment, Sydney Olympic Park is the most family friendly place to celebrate all the wonderful things about being Australian on Australia Day.

There will be plenty of free entertainment for the children including the Wild Aussie children’s entertainers, drumming, craft and circus workshops.  With Dr Seuss’ ‘Horton Hears a Who!’ showing on the big movie screen at 8.30pm.

The Lunar New Year will also be celebrated with workshops and performances by the Chinese acrobat Jerry Liu, a Chinese lion dance and the Oriental Dance Troupe.

The day starts at 12pm with the Citizenship Ceremony and Auburn’s Australia Day Ambassador Kerryn Phelps will honour Auburns citizens with the Australia Day Awards.  While later in the day, Vega’s Jo Abi will be hosting performers such as the Brent Street Dancers, Arabian Extreme and The Enormous Horns.
